NASA scientists have developed a geological model encouraged by the recent earthquake in Chile of 8.8 degrees on the Richter scale. The survey resulted in the modification of the tilt axis by 2.7 milliarcseconds, or what is equal to 8 cm linear. We quote the press release (Spanish translation):
Earthquakes can involve shifting hundreds of kilometers of rock several meters, changing the distribution of mass on the planet. This affects the rotation of the Earth.
The duration of the day should be shortened about 1.26 microseconds (millionths of a second). The axis about which the mass of the Earth is balanced should have moved about 2.7 milliarcseconds (about 8 centimeters or 3 inches).
